Christmas Day, a trip to Tagaytay

Tagaytay is a semi-rural community on the upper slopes of a volcano.  It's surrounded by pricy modern developments, second homes and retirement homes in a favorite get-away for Manila residents because its higher altitude brings cooler temperatures.  This was Geraldine's choice of a favorite place to show a foreigner from California.

My guides and I agreed to meet at a the Heritage Hotel because it was close to where they lived in Parañaque, and it's on the route to Tagaytay.  As they were about an hour late, I took advantage of the time to shoot the street scenes that start the next photo gallery.

Be sure to see the video of part of my first Trike ride (which we took down into the volcano and back out again, among other places while we were in Tagaytay).

Jeepneys are a uniquely Philippine innovation. They are privately owned and run regular routes. You can get a ride along their route for about 25 cents.

The back of the Jeepney has two bench seats running lengthwise and can be quite full during peak commute hours.

I got up early and had breakfast at the Heritage Hotel while waiting for my guides.

We took an airconditioned bus up the mountain. Due noxious tailpipe emissions that come in the windows, I don't recommend non-airconditioned busses.

Tricycle in Tagaytay

The three of us rode this little trike around town.

We took the trike (with no brake shoes!) down into the volcano to Lake Taal, where we took a boat to the volcano in the center.

We took little horses to the top of the volcano in the center of the Lake Taal.

One couldn't help but pitty these poor beasts of burden.

Poor underpowered trike laboring its way back up through a Jurassic Park-like jungle, to a great Hawaiian restaurant in Tagaytay before our late evening bus ride back to Manila.
