Topkapi Palace and Our Last Few Days in Istanbul

Time was running out for Maricor and I, but we filled each day as best we could.

We particularly enjoyed walking in the crowded markets around the Sultanahmet area -- not so much in the touristy bazaars, but in the neighborhoods around the bazaars where regular people shopped.  The Turkish notion of marketing is to put lots of similar businesses in the same area.  It makes for a very competitive market and salespeople who are fairly aggressive ("Come in and let me get you some tea." "You don't need a carpet? Let me sell you a carpet you don't need."  "Hi, where are you from?"  "Why haven't you visited my shop yet?")  Don't miss the photos below the video clip.

five times a day from 5am to 10pm.
Honestly, I loved it!

Blue Mosque

At Topkapi Palace

Fine Chinese pottery -- interesting to me how the ceramics we saw in Anatolia seemed all the more impressive by comparison.

Chimneys from the palace kitchens!

Kids lined up to take pictures with Maricor.

Many of the walls were decorated with finely crafted blue tiles.

And gold filigree was also very common

The Sultan's commode! At least the Roman version let you sit instead of squat.

Here we are in the Sultan's chambers I think.

My darling wearing a head scarf in the Blue Mosque.

This picture shows the jacket we got Maricor in Afyon, as the group makes our way to dinner.

This one brings tears to my eyes -- I'm missing you so much mahal.

A stop on the way for dried fruit.

Picking dessert.

Thank god for the pictures.

Hmmm.

Hmmm.

We fell in love with chai (Turkish tea). I'm kicking myself that I didn't buy any of those little fluted glasses, but I haven't had a cup of coffee since I discovered Turkish tea!

Ancient Roman underground cistern for storing the city's water supply.

It's hard to tell, but that's Maricor under the light.

Scarves -- often quite beautiful and frequently very colorful.

Another streetscape.
